Meet Jose Mata of Pueblo Real and Tito’s Mexican Restaurants

What inspired you to start your own business?

I was born in Mexico. I always had dreams of coming to the United States because it is a land where anything is possible! Upon moving here, I began building my experience and knowledge base working for restaurants. I eventually moved up and helped open restaurants for a national chain. The obvious next step in achieving my American Dream was to open my own restaurant and put my knowledge and skills to use in building something for myself, my family and my community.

What sets your business apart from everyone else?

Two primary things set the Pueblo Real/Tito’s brand apart. First, we work hard to provide high-quality meals. We provide a quality, family-friendly experience for the community,” Tito’s & Pueblo Real are Mexican restaurants that are inspired by the youthful spirit of the American Dream. It was my goal to create an energetic, family-friendly environment that reflected the youthful American spirit that brings so many people here to pursue the American dream.

Why do you love what you do?

I am driven by personal growth and a love of serving people. Owning five restaurants not only gives me an opportunity to literally serve my community by providing great meals, it also allows me to serve my employees through job training and personal growth opportunities. Our restaurants also enjoy giving back to the community through donations, fundraisers and community Spirit Nights.

What has been your biggest success to date?

My biggest success has been building a company that now includes 5 successful restaurants that allow me to support my family and provide work and income for over 250 employees.

What is another Nashville small business or organization you are inspired by?

Andy Marshall, owner of Puckett’s Restaurants, has always been an inspiration in the way that he has built and expanded a consistent brand that so many locals and visitors alike have grown to love.

What’s your best advice for someone who wants to start their own business?

Do your research, follow your passion and don’t be afraid to jump in and start. Make sure you are doing what you love because owning a business requires a huge amount of time. Every business experiences tough times, remember that you only fail when you give up.
